Professor Jenny Gunton
Prof Jenny Gunton is Head of the Centre for Diabetes, Obesity and Endocrinology (CDOE) at Westmead Institute for Medical Research. She's a physician scientist, and is Chair of Medicine at Westmead, University of Sydney. She did her PhD at the Kolling Institute and her post-doctoral studies at Joslin Diabetes Center / Harvard Medical School. On returning to Australia she set up the Diabetes and Transcription Factors group at Garvan Institute, where she remained until being recruited to Westmead.
With the session title Building resilience to stress and obtaining alternative grant funding in mind, she has held grants from a variety of funders, including NHMRC, JDRF, DART, RACP and local university and hospital sources. Resilience in science (or any career, or life in general) is difficult, but in science, the most important aspect to that she thinks is understanding that your hypotheses are not always going to be right. And, sometimes the unexpected answer can lead to more exciting questions and projects.
